2014 Wheelchair Softball World Series - Updated 01/21/20014 Date changed

A new date of August 14th – 16th , 2014 has been established for the 2014 Wheelchair Softball World Series to be hosted by Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Due a unavoidable conflict the sponsors of the tournament needed to move the championship from its previously announced date of August 21st - 23rd, 2014.

The new date conflicts directly with the 2014 National Veterans Wheelchair Games to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from August 12-17. NWSA and the host committee evaluated the various remaining dates available and selected the August 14th – 16th date. “We regret the conflict and know there will be decisions that have to be made by some players regarding attendance at our championship given the date conflict,” said Commissioner Bruce Froendt, “But the unusual late date for the Veterans games, the Junior Wheelchair Softball Championships in Chicago on August 8th-9th , and the general starting of schools in late August forced us to select the August 14th-16th dates.”

“We are excited to take our championship tournament back to the place where our sport originated, and experience the realization of many dreams in playing on the Todd Anderson wheelchair softball field,” commented Commissioner Bruce Froendt. “Eric Larsen, Supervisor of Sports and Recreation for Courage Kenny, and his team are making plans for an outstanding tournament and experience for our players and fans.”

One of the fields that will be used for the championships is the newly constructed Todd Anderson Field in Brooklyn Park, MN. Philanthropic support from the Pepsi Refresh Project and Major League Baseball, in partnership with the Minnesota Twins, the City of Brooklyn Park and others built and opened this beautiful field in 2012.

After 37 years the name of the championship tournament is being changed to the Wheelchair Softball World Series to recognize the growth of the sport across the world and the participation on foreign teams in the tournament, including those from Japan and Canada.
